Arthur Lee Hall, born Nov. 7, 1932, went home to be with the Lord on June 10, 2009. He was preceeded in death by his parents, Benjamin Franklin and Maude Erie Peters Hall; and sisters, Bobbie Thompson, Violet Kimmerly and Margaret Hansel. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Carleen Oody Hall; and children, a daughter, Shelia Hall Cantrell and husband, Richard; daughter, Enola Hall Jansto and husband, Tom; son, Jim Hall and wife, Deanne; daughter, Michelle Hall McGinnis and husband, Tim; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Jackie Ardnt, Sue Bell, and Marie Baker; brothers, Burrell Hall and Howard Hall; sisters-in-law, Betty Paskell and Ruth Byrge. A Koren War veteran, Mr. Hall retired from Martin Marietta in 1994 after 40 years of service. He was president of Machinist Local 480. He also was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church in Bon Aqua, Tenn. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be missed greatly by all who knew him. The family will receive friends Sunday, June 14, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Mynatt Funeral Home in Fountain City. Hazel Deakins Price, of Kingston, passed away Tuesday, June 9, 2009, at Harriman Care and Rehab. She was born Oct. 6, 1914, in Gray, Tenn. She and her late husband, John, established and operated Price Florist in Oak Ridge until they retired and moved to Kingston. Hazel and John were charter members of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge and became members of First Baptist Church of Kingston after retiring. Hazel was a talented floral designer and a beautiful person. She was preceded in death by her parents, J. E. and Mary Deakins; brothers, Richard and Raymond Deakins; and sisters, Mable Jobe, Ann McClanahan, Irene Deakins, and Virginia Brown. Survivors include a brother, J.E., and wife, Louise, of Gray, Tenn.; and special nieces, Loris Sitzlar and Shirley Colyer of Kingston. Helen Tilley Bissell, age 94, one of Oak Ridge's pioneers, passed away on Thursday, June 11, 2009, at Greenfield Retirement Center of Oak Ridge. She was preceded in death by parents, John and Hettie Tilley; sister, Ruth Tilley Johnson; and husband, Alvin Keith Bissell. Mrs. Bissell was born in Knoxville, Tenn., on Feb. 10, 1915, where she lived before moving to Oak Ridge in December 1943. She was a founding member of the '43 Club and a member of the Pilot Club. Having studied elocution in high school she had memorized many poems and dramatic readings often recited for the enjoyment of her family. She will be remembered as gracefully supporting her husband during his long tenure as mayor of Oak Ridge and the hospitality she offered to family and friends with her cooking and baking. Survivors include daughters, Jane Wright (Coleman), Betty McCarty (Colon) and Elaine Boncutter (Bruce); and sons, Keith Bissell (Patricia) and John Bissell. Her grandchildren, Debbie Farris (Larry) of Nashville, Tenn., Jeff Wright (Kitty) of Cary, N.C., Erin Sherlin (Joe) of Jonesborough, Tenn., Wendy Smith (Eddy) of Knoxville, Kelly Bissell Clarke of Nashville, Mandy Cross (Bryan) of Knoxville, Brooke Reynolds (Lentz) of Lookout Mountain, Ga., and Becca Spears (Wick) of Chattanooga, also survive. Imogene Poe Russell, age 84, of Dandridge passed away Friday, June 12, 2009 at the Jefferson Co. Nursing Home following an extended illness. A native of Dandridge and Jefferson Co. she was the daughter of the late Buford and Florence Miller Poe. Preceded in death by her husband, James H. "Jim" Russell and brother, J.P. Poe. Imogene was a fixture and long-time employee of Tinsley-Bible Drug Co. where she ran the drug store fountain for many years. She will be long remembered for her friendly greeting and conversation along with her serving many delicious fountain orders and thousands cups of coffee to the customers and loafers of the bustling downtown Dandridge business community. She is survived by her daughter, Kay Russell French of Jefferson City. Grandchildren, Lisa and Johnny Jennings of Charlotte, NC, Lance Noonkesser of White Pine. Jauana Jo Gambrell, 74, a longtime resident of Oak Ridge, passed away quietly on June 10, 2009, at NHC HealthCare of Oak Ridge. Born in Kettle Island, on Sept. 21, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Goldie May Lowe Hurst and Clyde Greene. She had been a bookkeeper for several different banks and retail stores. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Gambrell; and daughter, Kimberly "Joni" Gambrell. John Wesley Bishop, 99, of Oak Ridge, passed away Sunday, June 7, 2009, at his home. He was born Dec. 23, 1909, in Meridian, Miss., the son of George Washington Bishop and Amanda Morrow Bishop. Mr. Bishop retired in 1974 from Union Carbide Corporation, where he worked as a maintenance foreman for over 35 years at the K-25 plant. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eunice Bishop; son, George Wesley Bishop; daughter, Ann Marie Silver; stepson, Claude Fleetus McKenzie, and his wife, Ann Llewellyn McKenzie, of Baltimore, Md.; and his siblings, Willis Greene Bishop, Allen David Bishop, John Wesley Bishop, Virginia Mae Worthen, Maude Elizabeth Trest, Mamie Estelle Miles, Georgia Hamilton, Mary Alice Boswell and Mattie Eloise Shank, all of Mississippi. Marcia E. Wham passed away on June 10, 2009, at National Health Care in Oak Ridge. Marcia grew up in central Illinios and spent most of her 86 years in Illinois. She was a resident of Oak Ridge for five years. Marcia was born on April 27, 1923, to Homer and Helen Martin. She grew up in Taylorville, Ill., and graduated from Taylorville High School in 1941. While a teenager, Marcia enjoyed traveling throughout the country with her grandparents, mother and sister. Following high school Marcia attended Whitworth College in Brookhaven, Miss., with a focus on learning secretarial skills.  In 1952, Marcia traveled the country as a supporter of Adlai Stevenson's campaign for president. After the campaign she joined the U.S. Department of Agriculture. When her youngest child started school, Marcia obtained her real estate broker's license and handled home sales in the Springfield area.  Marcia served as a secretary in the Illinois State Senate for over 20 years as a secretary to Republican senators. Marcia volunteered her time to the Springfield community in many ways. She served as a leader for Cub Scouts and Brownies and supported the schools as president of the PTA. She also served as an election judge in local elections, and was a member of Pilots, a philanthropic organization.  She married Robert Wham on Nov. 21, 1956. During their nearly 30 years of marriage, Marcia and Bob and enjoyed many evenings playing bridge with a close-knit group of friends. She also engaged in this pastime with a group of women who met for afternoon sessions of bridge.   She is survived by her children, Bob (Dana) of Oak Ridge, Tenn., and Maleta (Ken) Simek of Barrington, Ill. Marcia was a devoted "Mimi" to her grandchildren Kellye (Mike) Arning, Matthew Wham, Wesley and Andrew Simek, and by her great-grandson Charlie Arning. She also leaves her sisters, Natalie (George) Upchurch of Taylorville and Florida, and Cinda (Chuck) Drake of Florida.  Marcia was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her sister, Patricia; and her parents, Homer and Helen Martin.  In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials to the Alzheimer's Association. Marjory Arends Hudson, age 85, of Oak Ridge, died June 10, 2009, at Methodist Medical Center. She was born in Melvin, Ill., on July 8, 1923, the daughter of Fred Arends and Lavina Giese Arends. She attended MacMurray College in Jacksonville, Ill., for two years. She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota in 1945, and came to Tennessee that year to teach in the Oak Ridge school system. She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Ed D. Hudson; son, Ed R. Hudson and wife, Jayne Moffatt, of Columbia, S.C.; daughter, Patricia Hudson and husband, Sam Stapleton, of Knoxville; granddaughters, Elizabeth Lee Stapleton and Erin Rebecca Stapleton of Knoxville; sister, Evelyn Arends Gulo of Streator, Ill.; brother, William Arends and wife, Jean Arends, of Melvin, Ill.; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Betty Anne Smallwood McCurry in Oct. 2007. Raymond was a US Air Force veteran of WWII, and was a retired Industrial Engineer with DuPont Corp. ROBERT LEE (R.L.) ZIMMERMAN |
Robert Lee (R.L.) Zimmerman, age 61, of Morristown went home to be with his Lord Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, Knoxville after a brief illness. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, Morristown and former member of Shepherd of the Sea Lutheran Church, Morehead City, NC. Preceded in death by sons, Brian and Travis Zimmerman; parents, Roy Lee and Mary Jane Zimmerman. He had a B.S. Degree from East Tennessee State University, Masters Degree from University of Mississippi, postgraduate work at East Tennessee State University and a teacher in Sullivan County for 30 years teaching Social Studies. R.L. served in the U.S. Navy from 1969 to 1973, after basic training in Orlando, FL R.L. completed advanced training at the Naval Communications training center, Corry Field, Pensacola, FL where he became a communications technician, technical branch. He then served at Naval Security Group activity in Kamiseya, Japan and later at NSGA Misawa, Japan. The Naval Security Group is a component of the National Security Agency whose main mission is intelligence gathering while in Japan. R.L. traveled extensively immersing himself in culture and local traditions. R.L. served in the Navy with great pride. Survivors include his wife, Joanie Zimmerman; son, Les (Theresa) Chee; grandchildren, Kenneth and Kim Francis; special young lady Beverly Hall; lifelong friends, Patrick Kerber and Bruce Mozelle. Funeral service will be 7 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009 at Mayes Family Services of Morristown with the Rev. Darris Doyle officiating. Richard John Meinert went home to be with our Lord after a long, courageous battle with Multiple Myeloma cancer on Monday, June 8, 2009. Dick was born to the late Russell Lewis Meinert (1906-1989) and Della Marie Meinert (1908-1988) in Toledo, Ohio. He has two surviving brothers, William Meinert Sr. and James Meinert Sr. Dick is also survived by his wife of 47 years, Beverly McLean Meinert; his two daughters and their spouses, Becky Clayton and husband, Gaylon, and Donna Dodson and husband, Brian; and his four grandchildren, Spencer Hill (PFC U. S. Army National Guard), Stacie Hill, and Dallas and Bailey Dodson. He was of the Lutheran faith and held God close to his heart all of his life. Dick's greatest joy in life was spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren, and friends sharing in love and laughter. During his lifetime, he enjoyed playing golf, roller skating, boating, water skiing, swimming, farming, fishing, hunting, woodworking, building hot rods, and building and/or remodeling every home he lived in. He touched the lives of everyone he met with his kind, gentle and loving nature and he will be greatly missed by all who knew him. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, June 20, 2009, at Tellico Village Community Church. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. June 20, with the Rev. Tim Meadows officiating. A reception will follow in the Christian Life Center. Shirley June Monday Massengill, age 70, a resident of Townsend, died Monday, June 8, 2009, at her home. Mrs. Massengill was born Oct. 4, 1938, in Knoxville. She moved to Oak Ridge at the age of 8, and onto Oliver Springs in early adulthood. Following her marriage, she moved to Petros and lived there for 30 years. She lived in Lafayette, Tenn., before moving to Townsend six years ago. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and a member of the Cove Road Baptist Church. Shirley was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Eugene Massengill Jr.; parents, Robert C. Monday and Cora Tolliver Scott Monday; and sisters, Maxine Lee and Juanita Daugherty. She is survived by her husband, Ralph Eugene Massengill, of Townsend; two daughters, Marilyn Sue Seiber of Oliver Springs, and Sheryl Michelle Massengill of Townsend; grandchildren, Michael Lively and Misty Lively of Oliver Springs, Chad Curtain and Cody Curtain of Townsend, Christopher, Kayla, and Kelsie Massengill of Oak Ridge, and Macy Vespie of Wartburg; and great-grandchildren, Jonathan Lively and Angel Lively of Harriman, and Makalya Lively of Oliver Springs. She is also survived by sisters, Sandra Lowe, and Pat Phillips and her husband, J.P., of Oliver Springs; special friends, JoAnn Massengill of Stephens, the Rev. Arnold Whitehead and wife, Sandy, of Maryville, and Frank White of Townsend; and by nieces, nephews, extended family members and other special friends. The family will receive friends Wednesday, June 10, 2009, between the hours of 6 and 8 p.m. at Sharp Funeral Home. The funeral will follow at 8 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with the Rev.
