Marcia Dickinson Riser

Thursday, December 11, 2008 4:01 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Marcia Dickinson Riser, age 64, of Oak Ridge, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008, surrounded by her loved ones at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville. Marcia was born on Sept. 18, 1944, in New York City, and spent her childhood in White Plains, N.Y. After graduating as a math major from Ohio University, Marcia married her lifelong partner and high school sweetheart, Gary Riser, on Dec. 30, 1966. They first moved to Oak Ridge in 1967. During her early years in Oak Ridge, Marcia's primary job was the one she most enjoyed -- being a mother and caring for her children. She pursued additional education in accounting, and later worked as an accountant for many small partnerships and as the controller of PAI Corporation. Marcia was very active in the community and spent many years dedicating her services to the Childbirth Education Association and the YWCA. She also supported many other community organizations over the years, including school PTAs and the Knoxville Ski Club. In 1993, after 26 years in Oak Ridge, Marcia and Gary moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where they learned to love the Southwest. Upon their full retirement in 1998, they sold their house and embarked on 10 years worth of travels around the world. Most of their time was spent RVing full-time in a large motor home. Marcia enjoyed her travels, seeing the beauty of the world and making many great friends along the way. She was proud to have spent time in all of the states, as well as most of the Canadian provinces. Marcia settled back into Oak Ridge this year with Gary, after a 15-year absence. She wanted a home to share with her children and grandchildren, and she returned to Oak Ridge because of the wonderful sense of community she felt here from all of her special friends. Marcia always enjoyed life and brought many smiles to those around her. She was very generous with the heartfelt love she spread among her family and friends, especially her four grandsons. She will be terribly missed. Marcia was preceded in death by her parents, John and Mildred Dickinson. Marcia is survived by husband, Gary Riser of Oak Ridge; son, Greg Riser and wife, Jennifer, of Mooresville, N.C.; daughter, Gretchen and husband, Joe Mauney, of Durham, N.C.; grandchildren, Grant and Austin Riser, and Benjamin and Brandon Mauney; and brother, Jack Dickinson and wife, Camille, of Madison, Wis. A celebration of Marcia's life is being held at the DoubleTree Hotel in Oak Ridge on Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. Those unable to attend are encouraged to leave a fond memory of Marcia in the Guestbook at www.caringbridge.org/visit/marciariser. Friends are encouraged to leave a fond memory of Marcia in the Guestbook at www.caringbridge.org/visit/marciariser. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to: Methodist Medical Center Hospitality House, (865) 835-4358, the American Cancer Society, www.cancer.org, or the charity of your choice.

Mary Nichols 'Nickie' Plante

Thursday, December 11, 2008 4:31 PM - GateHouse Media, Inc.

Mary Nichols Miracle Plante, known as Nickie, of Oak Ridge, died on Dec. 10, 2008. Nickie was born at home on March 31, 1933, to Marian Agnes "Mary Anne" Justice Miracle and Clarence "Mike" Miracle in Manchester, Ky. She spent her early years in Pineville, Ky. In December 1942, the family moved to Norris, Tenn., when her father, a civil engineer, was assigned to a team laying out what would be the city of Oak Ridge. Her mother was a teacher in the Oak Ridge school system when it opened in the fall of 1943. Although the family remained in Norris throughout World War II, they moved into Oak Ridge shortly after the war ended when housing became available. As her family was involved in Oak Ridge from its inception, Nickie considered herself a native of Oak Ridge. Nickie graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1950 and briefly attended Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn. In 1954, Nickie married Joseph J. Plante, a career U.S. Air Force serviceman. For 19 years, Nickie enjoyed life and adventures as a U.S. Air Force wife and went on to live at Lockbourne AFB, Ohio, and Kirtland AFB, New Mexico. In 1958, Nickie discovered that her mother was right -- she should have studied French rather than Spanish in high school -- when she went to live at Evreux-Fauville Air Base in France for three years. Nickie quickly set about learning French so that she could shop in town, as well as play bridge and socialize with French friends and acquaintances. Nickie also lived in Mount Holly and McGuire AFB, New Jersey -- returning to Oak Ridge each summer to continue her education. She graduated from University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 1966. She then lived in Oak Ridge and taught at Norwood Elementary School in Anderson County, Tenn., for a year while her husband served in Vietnam. She next lived at Fort Bragg and Pope AFB, North Carolina. Nickie and her family later lived on Andersen AFB in Guam. Following a second assignment to Pope AFB, she and her family returned to live in Oak Ridge in 1972. She lived in Oak Ridge until her death. Nickie enjoyed playing bridge, cooking, reading, sewing, swimming, watching football, and traveling. She loved parties, reunions, and pecan pie. Nickie talked to everyone she met and was known for her generosity. She was a volunteer for several organizations including Glenwood Elementary School, Oak Ridge Inter-club and Oak Ridge High School swim teams, Methodist Medical Center, Community Action Commission, and Oak Ridge Public Library, among others. She taught English to immigrants and reading to adults. She was a longtime member of the Oak Ridge Woman's Club and enjoyed activities at the Oak Ridge Senior Center. Nickie was the third of five generations of her family to live in Oak Ridge and to belong to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church. Her father, her mother, and her brother, William Justice Miracle, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Joseph Plante; their daughter, Lisa Plante; and their granddaughter, Jemina Plante. A son, Chris Plante and his children, Anna Kemper and Erik Plante, also survive her. In addition, her sister, Pat Miracle Millenbruch; nieces, Michelle Millenbruch Dennison and Kathy Miracle Lawson, as well as nephew Charlie Miracle, survive her, as do several great nieces and nephews. The burial service will be held at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Oak Ridge, Tenn., at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2008. The service will begin in the nave and conclude in the memorial garden. A reception will follow in the church undercroft. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that donations be made to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.
